Runners Ready for the Spartan Charity Challenge
Team ONE Spirit is gearing up for a unique challenge; the Spartan Race Charity Heat is a 4 mile obstacle course race through mud, over hurdles and other daunting obstacles. The Lakota Five, who garnered national attention last year at NYC Marathon after volunteering to help with Hurricane Sandy clean up, were invited to participate in this elite Challenge. On Sunday, September 22, this event will be nationally televised for 90 minutes on NBC, which presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase these Lakota runners and bring attention to their cause!
Each charity team is made of five members. Only the best 3 running times of the 5 runner teams are used, and the winners will have a shot at $5000 in prize money. In addition to the possibility of prize money, our runners have a shot at bringing awareness to their cause: The Allen Youth Center. We hope this venue will help bring awareness to the public of the desperate poverty and struggles of these indigenous people on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Even now, much of mainstream America has no knowledge of the third world conditions that exist in the heartland... we hope to change that.
Allen, SD is one of the poorest places in the western hemisphere. The teen suicide and high school drop-out rates are astounding. There's nothing for them there. These young people desperately need a safe place to play, learn and grow and a place to receive mentoring and inspiration. We intend to give them that place with the Youth Center. Our hope is that the Allen Youth Center will be a prototype for other youth centers around the reservation- but we've got to get it built first!
The Lakota Five are proud to run for the Lakota Nation and ONE Spirit. Support their efforts as ambassadors for the Oyate by contributing to their cause.
They think the Lakota children are worth it... do you?
