Festival for Life
Since the beginning of this year, 11 youth on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota have committed suicide, the youngest being only 11 years old. In addition, Pine Ridge Hospital has treated youth who attempted to do so, 241 attempts in all. Many youth on the reservation are being lost to drugs, alcohol and gangs. The future of the Lakota people is at risk and a state of emergency has been declared. Counseling is being provided in all the schools, youth groups have been formed to offer support, suicide prevention phone lines are being advertised and monitored around the clock to provide immediate help.
The Lakota youth of Pine Ridge Reservation are the foundation of their people’s future. In light of the recent epidemic of youth suicide, ONE Spirit is committed to doing everything we can to help with this call to action for suicide prevention.
We recently found out that on the 25th and 26th of this month, a “Festival for Life” is to be held on the powwow grounds of the reservation in celebration of the Lakota youth and their importance to the world. A total of 4 big name bands will perform - Indigenous, Big Gemini, Low G and Medicine Woman, all free of charge. There will be local musicians showcasing their talent, food, hairstyling, bouncing houses and more. Over 2000 youth are expected to participate.
ONE Spirit has been asked to provide food for this event - hot dogs, hamburgers, brats. This event is very important to the youth and to the Lakota people as a whole. The food will cost $8000 - a small price to prevent future suicides among the youth. Can you help us with this cost? No amount is too small and anything you are able to give is greatly appreciated. If you would like to contribute to the future of the Lakota youth you can send a check to ONE Spirit at our address above, or visit our web-site for PayPal or credit card donations. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call us at 570-460-6567.
With Great Hope for the Lakota Youth,
The ONE Spirit Team
