Ray Blocker recently entered the following cause for One Spirit at "Kind Causes":

Propane and Firewood for Pine Ridge Reservation

What is your cause and how will it make the world kinder?

My cause is to help provide winter fuel for Pine Ridge Reservation elders and families, who are unable to afford this commodity due to unemployment, poverty, and propane price gouging. The recent rise in propane costs has made choosing between monthly food or fuel a frightening decision. Other grant programs, donations, and tribal resources tend to run short when fighting winter temperatures which can reach 40 below (1983).

The Kind Cause grant of $10,000 would supply a warmer respite for 50 families living on the edge; you may "kindly" save an elder's or child's life.

The Lakota children are the future of the Oglala Sioux Tribe; the elders are its teachers and connection to the past. He who saves one life; saves the world, entire.

How will you use the $10k?

The $10,000 grant will be used to buy propane and firewood from a local supplier beginning on or about December 10, 2015, and concluding when the funds are exhausted or on February 28, 2016. The unpredictability of SD blizzards and the demand for fuel may modify the delivery schedule. The target population will be Oglala Lakota elders and Pine Ridge Reservation families with young children; these two groups are the most susceptible to the extreme temperatures of South Dakota winters.

Elders and families with children will also be encouraged to sign up early with nonprofits, i.e. EZRA Fund for a chance at a onetime payment made to the supplier. A list of other nonprofits will be compiled for quick reference during an emergency.

What impact do you hope to make?

On February 4, 2014, Debbie Dogskin, a Lakota woman living on Standing Rock Reservation which straddles North and South Dakota, died in her sleep when her propane tank ran dry in subzero weather. Debbie's death was the impetus for Standing Rock Tribal leaders/activists to procure monies to stave off a similar occurrence this winter. Debbie Dogskin gave a name and a face to the deadly winter conditions that prevail over the Dakotas.

The $10,000 grant will target the coldest months of the six month period following the issuance of the award...December 2015 through February 2016. Again, the weather may dictate an earlier start and finish.

Information regarding elders and families in need of winter fuel will be gleaned from various sources, i.e. nonprofits, tribal organizations, fuel providers, etc. These frontline sources would have the best data on the fuel situation which would then be cross referenced to avoid nepotism and duplication of services by individuals or groups with similar "Kind" endeavors.

KIND Causes' impact would be to prevent or reduce hypothermia deaths this year on Pine Ridge Reservation when grant proceeds are combined with other nonprofit contributions, EREZ funds, Oglala Sioux Tribal monies, Citgo Heating Oil Program, and generous grants from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

In order to be granted the 10,000 $ we need as many votes as possible.
