We are taking giant steps with the End Hunger Project Home for the food pantry. The Wanblee School Board has donated a building to house the food pantry.
Shelves for the pantry are being donated and delivered by Feeding South Dakota. One Spirit has purchased a commercial cooler which will be delivered next week. The community has chosen two staff members to run the pantry. We are working with 4 partner agencies on a plan for stocking the pantry. One Spirit will be the lead agency and will work with Wanblee community to make the pantry a success.
Sustainable food source
An anonymous donor has set up a challenge grant for One Spirit supporters. They are challenging One Spirit supporters to match their donation of $14,000 for the Bring Back the Buffalo Project. This project will increase the buffalo herd, set up the meat processing facility where 25% of the meat processed will initially be part of the food pantry. The facility will process buffalo, hunted animals and beef cattle for the farmers. Best of all, it will create a sustainable food source on the reservation and enable the Lakota to feed their community.
Moving forward at full speed
As we transition to food pantries, we will be continuing the food program as it currently exists to ensure that food gets to as many families and elders as possible. Buying food for families and elders - $65 per box - includes delivery over unpaved roads to homes wherever they are on the reservation. This month, we again have an abundance of produce directly from the farm at Mark Rillings Produce in Pierre. This produce is about as fresh as you can get it. The End Hunger Project is moving ahead at full speed.
Let’s keep it going!
