I’m a member of PRES, the French organization that helps the Pine Ridge Reservation for several years.

Everything begins by a wish, the one of helping natives peoples inside the Reservation, and not only from across the ocean.

So I decided to go on my own and made a road trip inside South Dakota, discovering the beautiful landscapes and stories from here.

Inside the reservation I stayed at the Singing Horse Trading Post, a lodging I would  warmly recommend. Rosie the host is so nice and helpful. The welcome and  the view are really worth it. It also has a shop with local products.

May Food Distribution

A Chance to Help

I had the chance to help at the food distribution on the 28th of May. A big and motivated crew was here, waiting to pack the boxes for the needy.
Members of One Spirit were here too: Lisa, Gabriela, Kelly and Jeri. We didn’t know each other but we were here for the same goal and already a team!

Making boxes

I joined Kay Ann to give the food boxes to people in Manderson. I understand now why most people here have pickups and SUVs we had to drive up and down on such bad trails!

When we stopped at houses, people were nice and thankful, some people were even curious to know where I was from!

Tragic Stories

But Also Hope

I heard tragic stories about suicide, tragic car accidents due to alcoholism, children left alone on their own without any parents to take care of them.

But I also felt hope: A strong unity with One Spirit who does a great job, a new hospital and buildings like the Safe House where young people can find a place to stay, and spread awareness about the Reservation thanks to internet and the area Chamber of Commerce.

The feeling I take back is that I did something good with my hands, not only giving money from home. I’m so glad I did it, I met great people and will never forget it!

I can’t wait to go back ! ~Anne
