Thanks to our wonderful One Spirit family, it has been a good year for meeting goals to end hunger on the Reservation.
Harvest season is winding down and we are privileged to again this month provide produce available from the local garden on the Rez. - Tomatoes, peppers, corn, melons, squash – and this will be supplemented by apples, oranges, potatoes, onions, and other produce from the farmer in Pierre as well as hamburger and sausage.
We have a lot to be thankful for
Later this month, while we are on the Reservation to celebrate the installation of solar on the Allen Youth Center, we will also be meeting with the Lakota gardeners to plan for next season. Further, we will be meeting with folks about the use of a building for a food pantry. More details on this later.
The Buffalo House is open. With a grant from the Tatanka Foundation, work is underway to build fences and repair existing ones to allow for the growth of the buffalo herd. Hunting season is coming and approval from the State of South Dakota for custom exempt status will allow the facility to be used to serve the tribe and hunters. The Allen Youth Center is harvesting a buffalo to be used as part of their food program for the community.
Below is the list of foods that will be distributed this month. There are 500 families on the “list” and every month more than 100 families who are not on any list come to us in need of food. In addition, we meet the urgent needs of those without food during the month. We hope that you are happy, as we are, to be able to help ensure that while the Lakota build up their own food resources, we can help ensure that they do not go hungry.
