We are continuing to work with the Lakota toward eliminating the designation of Pine Ridge as a place of food insecurity and establishing self-sufficiency. As part of this process we are negotiating for a couple of buildings in which to establish food storage and a food market and are working with local growers to help them expand their crops this year. We will be incorporating locally grown foods as well as buffalo meat into the food program. Thanks to all of you, there is real progress toward wiping out hunger on the Reservation.
Meanwhile, we continue to try to provide food to over 6000 people now with more people waiting. In addition, in Allen, we will be providing hot meals Friday through Sunday to fill in when the school meals are not available to the children. We are also stocking food there for urgent needs. In Pine Ridge, we are supporting the efforts of Ruby Schuleter to distribute food to the homeless. Ruby provides meals twice a week to over 100 homeless people.
Govt. Shutdown- Food Stamps Update
February food stamps were issued in January but are never sufficient and typically only last a family a few days. Now, due to the government shutdown, there will be no more issued until March 10. Needless to say, people are out of food. Please help prevent families, elders and children from going hungry.
With your continued support, we will see an end to hunger on the Rez. Children will go to school with full stomachs and come home to a nutritious dinner. This month we are also adding nutritious food that children can eat when their parents are not available to prepare a meal.
We sincerely thank you for being part of the End Hunger Program.
