One last push

Fall is the harvest time for buffalo and for other game taken by Lakota hunters, so the need for your generous donations is acute to enable One Spirit and the Lakota to get the Charging Buffalo House up and running immediately.

One of the amazing things about watching an elite athlete running a race, even a marathon, is that will to put forth a final burst of energy to achieve a victorious outcome.

For the past few years, One Spirit and the Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Reservation have been running a marathon effort to complete the Charging Buffalo House: a fully-equipped, USDA-compliant meat processing facility that will enable the Lakota to process buffalo and other traditional meats to provide sound nutrition to people so desperately in need.

An Epidemic of Despair

Since our inception, One Spirit has been focused first on providing natural, healthy food to the Lakota people of the Pine Ridge Reservation, one of the most poverty-stricken places in the country.

Here, the lack of proper nutrition and massive unemployment have led to a sense of despair that leads to unhealthy life choices that create epidemic levels of diabetes, and more ominously, alcoholism. These threaten the very existence of the Lakota and prolong the persecution of this noble native people that began in the nineteen century and continues unabated.

Recognizing our food suppliers

This month we want to recognize the suppliers of our food. Mark Rillings and Rillings Produce from Pierre has been providing food to the program for years. Every month they deliver the freshest of meat and produce. During harvest, the produce from Mark’s farm gets to food distribution within 24 hours of being picked. This produce includes tomatoes, corn, cantaloupe, watermelons, cucumbers, squash, potatoes, onions, etc.

A huge step forward

Meat House and TipiWe are pleased to announce that One Spirit has received a $6900 grant from the Black Hills Area Community Foundation. These funds will be used to buy needed equipment for The Buffalo House Meat Processing facility and will directly help provide the traditional meat needed by the Lakota to prevent the diet related diseases that are so rampant on the Reservation.

This project is a huge first step toward the goal of ending hunger on the Reservation.
