Help urgently needed
Lately, we have had an increase in the number of families who have urgent needs. The home of a grandmother who lives with her 7 children and 8 grandchildren completely burned down recently. Fortunately, her family escaped unharmed, but they only saved the clothes on their back. Her 24 year old daughter delivered an 8# baby boy on the day of the fire. The clothing and baby necessities her daughter had collected all burned, too. No other housing was available in their town, so they had to relocate 47 miles away. Now all 16 of them are sleeping on the floor. They don’t have any beds, furniture, sheets, blankets, towels, cooking or eating containers or utensils. And there are 8 children under the age of 7.
Another family with 5 children recently moved back to the reservation. They have no sheets, blankets and minimal clothing.
Another couple who are elders, don’t have the basic personal necessities for hygiene.
Two elders, both with diabetes, are living in a one room house heated only by wood. They need shoes and laundry detergent.
Another elder, age 70, is raising 2 grandchildren and needs clothing for them and for herself.
If you are able to send any new or gently-used items to these families and others like them, please contact Gaye at gmckim@nativeprogress.org or Shelly at spowers@nativeprogress.org. We will then give you the individual addresses.
